Resources to dive deeper on the topics of the week.
- The core of this week's conversation on video games revolves around the specious (at best) ways that a "cycles" framing excuses imperialism among other things. Given that The Last of Us Part II was discussed, it is apt to point folks to The myth of the ‘cycle of violence’; it explores the same conversation in the context of Israeli settler colonialism (the throughline here is Israel; the director of the game was born in Tel Aviv, and one can tell). The introduction to Order, Conflict and Violence, and Fanon on Violence and the Person are also worth looking at.
- Radical change is both individual and collective. Looking into Dean Spade's work, especially Mutual Aid, is a great way to start thinking more deeply about these things. Beyond that, texts that uncover histories of struggle, including Fighting for ourselves: Anarcho-syndicalism and the class struggle by Solidarity Federation, The Bolsheviks and Workers' Control by Maurice Brinton, and Starting with People Where They Are: Ella Baker’s Theory of Political Organizing are great sources of rooted inspiration.
